On a calm and peaceful Saturday afternoon at 'The Home of Football' Sports entertained local rivals Marketeers who were back in the top division after one Season in the Second and had made a good start to the campaign.
Sports manager Jason Bale made a few changes from last week bringing Jason Jones & Craig McGann back into the team and with Darryl Cocks away this allowed Sports favourite Steve Wood to start in midfield. A late change was forced when Simon Dodden was unable to start allowing Chris Clark to step up from teh Subs bench to slot in at left back.
Once young referee James Conway had blown the whistle to start the game the earlier peace and calm disappeared! With Matt 'Fuzzy' Fursland's first couple touches of the ball he was clattered in what was clearly going to be Marketeers game plan but when Fuzzy (The Ginger Physco) gave them some of their own medicine it resulted in a yellow card for Fuzzy but a red card for John Creedy of Marketeers for retaliation.
With only a few minutes gone and facing a fired up 10 man Marketters Sports struggled to get any rhythem going and the game became scrappy with James Conway the busiest man on the pitch!
Sports got the breakthrough after 25 minutes when a mix up in the Marketeers box allowed Paul Organ the easiest ot tap ins from the goal line to make it 1-0. They all count you can Paul say!!
This moved the home team up a gear and starting playing with new belief and it was no surprise when it became 2-0. A good move down the left involving Chris Clarke and Craig McGann allowed a cross come into the box and an unmarked Fuzzy cooly headed in after 30 minutes.
With Marketeers heads down it was important that Sports kept on pushing and that is is exactly what happened and the game was made safe before half time when Matt Fursland broke through and neatly rounded Keeper Steve Baker to slot home for his second and Sports' third.
At half time a resiliant Sports wanted to keep the pressure on and try and win the game by a bigger margin. The tactics of Marketeers had fired up Sports who were keen to prove a point, however once that second half whistle went so did Sports baptism of fire. The second half became lack lustre but Sports never looked in any danger of conceding until a free kick twenty yards out was quickly taken by the impressive Ian Luke to make it 3-1.
Marketeers had a renewed belief and took the game to Sports without really causing any real concern to keeper Adam Rawle. It was when Marketeers pushed more men forward that allowed Sports to start playing the Football again and the game became more open.
Bale switched Craig McGann up front & moved the hard working Jason Jones onto the left and bought young Jack Taylor on for Paul Organ who had another exceptional game, however his tantrum after being taken off was hilarious and rightly earned him the Donkey of the Week!!
The switch played dividends as Fuzzy secured the three points when he went past a couple of challenges before rounding the keeper again and firing into the net to give him his hatrick. A header, right footed finish and one with the left!!
To Marketeers credit they never stopped battling, sometimes over zealous as Adam Rawle found out and when substitute Dave Baker made Chris Clark look like he was on ice, Baker neatly finished to make it 4-2 with five minutes remaining.
Tackles were traded in the last few minutes but that was about it and when the final whistle went Sports had secured three more points against a Marketeers team who will no doubt be up there when the season finishes.
